COURSE FORMAT

How are classes structured?

Classes follow a pattern of monthly classes. For adult classes, there are three Zoom lessons per week at the same time. For youth classes, we can design a schedule and regularity that works for your institution and classroom needs. Each adult and youth lesson lasts around 30 minutes in length.

ADULT CLASS CADENCE

  • Brief sharing time to encourage engagement (often with found objects in students' homes

  • A review of the lesson's objectives

  • Introduction of new topics and vocabulary

  • A review of prior lessons' vocabulary through picture stories (first in the 2nd language, then in English)

  • A dialogue to recycle, review, and practice previously introduced vocabulary

  • A farewell circle

YOUTH CLASS CADENCE

  • A review of class rules to help everyone learn

  • Brief sharing time to encourage child engagement

  • A game to recycle, review, and practice previously introduced vocabulary

  • A farewell song

ENRICHMENT - Self-Led or Parent-Led Review

A Linking Language | Telling Tales "LLTT Packet" (part student-led or parent-led review, part workbook for the student) will be provided via PDF to the adult or parent via email at the beginning of each week. This packet is rich with links to online videos, books to buy or borrow at your library, age-appropriate pictures to color with vocabulary review, and a short primer for the adult student or parent. LLTT believes strongly in empowering learners to take what they learned in online lessons and integrating it in their everyday lives at home and beyond.

What is the style of class?

Our playful language lessons will be lead by me, Señora Jota. In our kids classes by my friend, Señor Cocodrilo, will also join us. Each lesson contains slides that guide our learning and acquisition. Participants will be continually encouraged to watch, listen respectfully, take turns by raising a hand, and share at appropriate times. During our lessons Señora Jota will also remind learners to be copycats—to imitate my gestures and vocabulary. Movement and gestures lead to increased engagement and unconscious learning.

By listening, watching, gesturing, and making connections via pictures, adults and children effortlessly acquire a second language. Our songs captivate. Our simplified stories and illustrations introduce new words and recycle previously introduced vocabulary. Learners interact primarily with me - their learning leader - Señora Jota.

What is the pacing of the class?

Each class will recycle and repeat previously introduced vocabulary and will focus on 3-4 new words. Students will never be put "on the spot” or tested during our lessons. The overall goal is to acquire the second language, not to study it or memorize vocabulary.  Production will not be forced, but participants will be encouraged from time to time during each lesson to repeat or sing highly repetitive songs.
